Plistocénico, a argila AI 12, datada do Kimeridgiano-Oxfordiano médio, a marga A5 do Hetangiano-Sinemuriano e finalmente o xisto Al20 pertencente à Formação de Mira.
### /ABSTRACT -
The traditional ceramics uses clay as essential raw material. In Alentejo, due to the scarcity of this raw material, the ceramics industry is almost inexistent, being necessary to import from other region, both raw materials (to mantain the activity of few pottery plants) and ceramic products (brick, floor tile, roof tile, wall tile, etc.).
The scarcity of clay bears serious problems and economic and social inconvenients to the region whose pottery has been recognized for many years by its unique designs.
That's why it was found interesting to systematically survey, characterize, quantify and evaluate any deposits of clay or of clayey materials (for example, marls and Paleozoic schists of low of metarnorphic grade) and other potentially interesting ceramic raw materials, such as limestone, dolostone and sandstone, existing in the region.
Studies have been developed in the area of Santiago do Cacém due to, both the existence in the past of ceramic plants, and the great variety of lithologies outcroping in the area.
This study, in a first phase, gathered geological field information in order to select the best outcrops of potentially interesting geomaterials, where the sampling survey would be carried out. In a second phase, samples were chemically, mineralogically and technologically characterized. In a third phase ceramic pastes had been prepared and their ceramic properties were assessed.
The characterization studies were made at the of the Geosciences Department of the University of Évora and at the Laboratories of the University of Aveiro. The technological studies were carried out at the Cencal Laboratories – Centro de Formação Profissional para a Industria Cerâmica (Profissional Learning Centre for the Ceramics Industry) in Caldas da Rainha.
Among the investigated raw materials, some of them such as, the clay A117 dated from the Plio-Plistocene, the clay A112, dated from the Kimeridgian-Oxfordian medium, the marl. A5 dated the Hetangian-Sinemurian, and the schist Al20, belonging to the Mira Formation have shown the best properties in regard to its eventual use as raw materials for structural ceramics.
Within the ceramic pastes prepared with the previously selected raw materials properly blended in pre-defined percentages, the three pastes no 9, 7 and 1 were the ones that showed the best properties in terms of the potential manufacture of construction ceramic. |
