Abstract: Fondée en 1780 par Diogo Inácio de Pina Manique, Intendant Général de la Police de
The Real Casa Pia of Lisboa (1780-1805): welfare and social control policies -
The Royal Casa Pia of Lisbon, founded in 1780 by the Intendente-General of the Police
of the Court and the Kingdom, Diogo Inácio de Pina Manique, stands as one of the most
emblematic charitable institutions in Portugal at the end of the Ancien Régime. Conceived
as an instrument of training and social regeneration inspired by Enlightenment values, it
combined discipline, labour, hygiene, and education with the aim of transforming
problematic individuals – or those potentially deemed problematic because of their poverty
or other forms of vulnerability – into “useful citizens.”
This research examines how the Police of the Court and the Kingdom sought to reform
welfare practices and social control between 1780 and 1805. Based on a large database
comprising more than 13,000 admissions of men, women, and children to the various
institutions that made up the Real Casa Pia – cross-referenced with administrative correspondence and parish registers – the study employs both quantitative and qualitative
approaches to reconstruct individual trajectories and to understand the logics of social
control implemented by the Intendente-General of Police.
The analysis unfolds in four parts, in addition to the introduction and conclusion. The
first part examines the formation of the police state in Portugal and shows how the Real Casa
Pia de Lisboa, distinct from traditional prisons, became an instrument of social regulation
based on education, work, and the management of poverty. The second focuses on the
institutionalized populations – men, women, and prostitutes – and sheds light on their strategies
of survival and resistance. The third examines the education and training of children and
young people, as well as the mechanisms of social and professional reintegration. Finally,
the last part explores the expansion of the institution through projects of economic and social
development, from Lisbon to Manique do Intendente and even to the Azores.
By revealing the tensions between reformist ambitions and social resistance, this
dissertation shows that the Real Casa Pia embodies both a disciplinary project and a pioneering experiment in welfare. It thus invites a rethinking of the relationship between police,
assistance, and society during the transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century; - Resumo:

New Insights into Somatic Embryogenesis Efficiency in Olea europaea L

Title: New Insights into Somatic Embryogenesis Efficiency in Olea europaea L
Authors: Pires, Rita Nobre
No entanto, a
recalcitrante; Somatic embryogenesis (SE) has emerged as an alternative strategy for the clonal propagation of olive
trees, particularly for genotypes characterised by high recalcitrance to adventitious root development
when propagated using conventional methods. However, the high recalcitrance of adult tissues to the
induction of embryogenic structures continues to limit the application of this technology. Therefore,
understanding the molecular mechanisms associated with the embryogenic response is of particular
importance for the development of alternative propagation systems applicable to the national olive
industry. SE is a morphogenic response induced by exogenous stimuli that involves cellular
reprogramming at the molecular level, reflected in biochemical and physiological changes that
culminate in the differentiation of embryogenic structures. During this process, the interaction between
explants and the culture medium is crucial, including exposure to biomolecules secreted by plant tissues.
This exchange of molecules, particularly proteins and metabolites, between intracellular and
extracellular compartments may contribute to the modulation of the embryogenic response. The present
study aimed to identify mechanisms involved in SE efficiency in olive through the characterisation of
the proteome of high-efficiency (HE) and low-efficiency (LE) embryogenic lines and their
corresponding secretome by LC–MS/MS, complemented by exometabolome analysis using ¹H NMR.
The ability of secreted biomolecules to induce the embryogenic response was assessed by applying
conditioned medium (CM) from HE lines to LE lines and adult material. The results revealed a higher
abundance of proteins associated with vesicular transport, signalling, and cellular reorganisation in HE
lines, which also exhibited, at the extracellular level, proteins related to redox regulation and cell wall
dynamics, together with more efficient carbon utilisation. Application of the CM validated the role of
secreted molecules in the embryogenic response by promoting increased cell proliferation and the
formation of embryogenic structures in recalcitrant material.

Abstract: Esta tese investiga a interpretação musical enquanto prática relacional, analisando a
Performer’s Space: Musical interpretation as a relational space in
sustained collaboration between composer and performer
This thesis investigates musical interpretation as a relational practice, examining the
sustained collaboration between composer and performer in contemporary musical
performance. Based on two artistic projects conceived as research devices, the study seeks to
understand how interpretative space is constructed when this relationship unfolds over time.
Rather than approaching interpretation as a simple mediation between score and sonic
realization, the research shifts the focus towards performance as a space of decision,
listening, and negotiation.
The methodology articulates artistic practice as research, questionnaires, interviews, and
autoethnographic reflection, organized within a methodological ecosystem guided by an
ethics of listening and proximity. Contributions gathered from specialists, including
composers, conductors, sound engineers, and editors, allow the observation of performative
practice beyond normative or generalizable models.
From this trajectory emerges the concept of performer’s space, understood as an
interpretative space produced relationally and constructed through listening, time, and artistic
practice. The thesis thus proposes an understanding of musical interpretation that
acknowledges the complexity of collaborative processes and affirms performance as a site for
the production of artistic knowledge.

Dynamic ecological patterns of insular short-finned pilot whales

Title: Dynamic ecological patterns of insular short-finned pilot whales
Authors: Weyn, Mieke Mariette J
Abstract: Effective conservation of highly mobile species, such as cetaceans, depends on understanding the spatial and temporal dynamics of habitat use, movements, and connectivity, particularly in insular systems. This thesis advances that understanding for Atlantic Naisa short-finned pilot whales inhabiting Macaronesia by integrating satellite telemetry, long-term photographic-identification data, and ecological modelling, complemented by sex-specific social analyses based on genetically sexed individuals which provide behavioral context for interpreting dispersal and philopatry. At a regional scale, marked connectivity was observed between Madeira and the western Canary Islands based on photo-identification and telemetry data. Preferred areas and movement pathways were identified, highlighting the potential importance of the western Canary Islands as a mixing area and the existence of a potential biological corridor. Specifically, in Madeira, biotelemetry and movement modelling showed that short-finned pilot whales use island-associated waters in a strongly structured way. Madeira functions as an important seasonal aggregation area, with critical near-shore habitat southeast of Madeira Island used by individuals differing in site fidelity, consistent with condition-dependent tactics in a partial-migration system. At the oceanic basin scale, crossmatching of large long-term photo-identification catalogues from the eastern and western North Atlantic found no conclusive evidence of current trans-Atlantic movements, suggesting that such interchange is either rare or difficult to detect with currently available datasets. Finally, sex-specific social analyses showed that both females and males form long-term, non-random associations, with females more strongly anchored to clusters and males contributing disproportionately to occasional inter-cluster links. Overall, this thesis shows that the dynamic ecology of short-finned pilot whales in Macaronesia is characterized by a combination of seasonal residency, recurrent inter-archipelago movements between preferred/important areas - emphasizing the need for international collaboration - and sex-specific social organization. This integrated perspective helps refine current understanding of the species and provides a stronger ecological basis for conservation planning; - RESUMO:
