Authors: Robilliard, Marie-Amélie
Abstract: (INTRODUCTION)

Abstract: Banco de sementes do solo.
- SUMMARY -
Soil seedbanks. Vertical distribution and effects of tillage
Soil seedbanks were studied to characterize their vertical distribution in sons not tilled for at least ten years and to evaluate the effects of plough, tine cultivation and harrowing in the vertical distribution of seeds. The importance and usefulness of shape, and size expressed by numbers, were examined in relation to a number of features of the biology and dynamics of soil seedbanks, and models to describe the size number distribution of seeds were investigated. The description of seedbanks by the model selected is similar and broadens the conclusions from the analysis of number of seeds alone. Differences in vertical distribution before tillage were found between spherical and non-spherical seeds as well as among seed sizes. Besides inborn persistence of smaller spherical seeds, location persistence is suggested for greater spherical seeds and non-spherical seeds, that will not germinate because of their deeper location. Changes in depth distribution of soil seedbanks depend upon the tillage, the effects of plough being independent of size and shape. Tine cultivation increases inborn persistence and reduces location persistence in non-spherical seeds. Harrowing increases inborn persistence and reduces location persistence except in greater, non-spherical seeds.

The Evolution of Galactic Fountains

Title: The Evolution of Galactic Fountains
Authors: Avillez, Miguel A. de
Abstract: "Sem resumo feito pelo autor"; - Gas that escapes from the Galactic disk, rises into the halo, cools and falls back, constitutes a "Galactic fountain". The Galactic fountain includes the outflows that result from isolated as well as clustered supernovae scattered in the Galactic disk, which respectively generate large scale as well as localized outbursts. Up to now such outflows have been considered independently. However, it is proposed here that such independent effects are in fact the result of a global mechanism occuring within the Galactic disk.
This mechanism has been studied by means of a three-dimensional hydrodynamical Godunov class scheme. The scheme uses a third order polynomial interpolation algorithm to solve the Riemann problem at the cells interfaces. It allows for radiative cooling and uses a local uniform regridding technique, which automatically refines the flow regions where steep, variations of pressure occur.
The numerical results presented here show that the Galactic fountain is formed by a turbulent conective flow that rises into the halo. HI clouds result from Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities at the interface of cool descending gas with the ascending warmer gas, these clouds possibly being identified as the HI complexes previously observed in the halo. Some of these clouds may in turn be disrupted by energetic fountain gas that comes from below and especially from chimneys. These have been supposed to be generated by a large number of type II supernovae. However, the results presented here show that two sucessive supernovae can on their own produce a similar effect.

Temporary ponds vegetation and dynamics:SW Portugal

Title: Temporary ponds vegetation and dynamics:SW Portugal
Authors: Pinto-Cruz, Carla
Abstract: Temporary ponds are seasonal wetland habitats subjected to extreme and unstable ecological conditions. Due to their uniqueness, some are classified as priority habitats for conservation by the European Union Habitats Directive. The coastal plain of southwest Portugal, which spans across 100 km north to south and hosts a large number of temporary ponds as a consequence of climatic and edaphic characteristics, was thus chosen as the study area.
The main aim of this dissertation is to study the biology, ecology and dynamics of the plant communities of temporary ponds. Three pond types were defined, Mediterranean temporary ponds, marshlands and disturbed ponds. Within them 15 plant communities and their indicator plant species were identified, enabling clear practical recognition of these habitats. A functional plant classification is proposed in order to allow comparative ecological assessments in Mediterranean temporary ponds throughout the globe. The results confirm the importance of the hydroperiod and soil texture as driving factors of ecosystem functioning. This work emphasizes the importance of these singular habitats for conservation and gives insights for its sustainable use and possible restoration.
