Title: Phenological mismatches disrupt bat-mediated biocontrol services in olive groves
Authors: Carvalho, Ana
Abstract: Management intensification is known to compromise bat-mediated biocontrol
services in olive groves through spatial mismatches between bats and olive pests.
However, no information exists regarding disruptions in biocontrol services driven by
temporal mismatches between species.
To fit this gap of knowledge, we analyzed the distribution of Pipistrellus kuhlii passes
throughout the night in three seasons and in different types of olive groves. We also
studied the time when Prays oleae activity peak occurs on several nights to compare with
the bat species.
Our results suggest that the intensification of olive grove management practices does
not equally compromise the biocontrol service in the different seasons. In summer, we
found that only in olive groves with low structural complexity there is no overlap between
the time when the two peaks of activity occur but during autumn, we found that there is
always a phenological mismatch, regardless of management practices.2020-01-01T00:00:00ZAVALIAÇÃO DA ACÇÃO DE LEUCAENA LEUCOCEPHALA EM PARASITAS GASTROINTESTINAIS E PULMONARES DE CABRAS DA REPÚBLICA DEMOCRÁTICA DE SÃO TOMÉ E PRÍNCIPE

Abstract: EVALUATION OF THE ACTION OF LEUCAENA LEUCEPHALA ON
GASTROINTESTINAL AND PULMONARY PARASITES IN GOATS OF THE
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF SÃO TOME AND PRINCIPE
The health problems, namely the presence of gastrointestinal and pulmonary parasites, are the
major obstacles to animal production in the islands of São Tomé and Principe. Due to its
geographical situation and its economic situation makes it difficult to get antiparasitic drugs.
Thus, it was intended to find an inexpensive viable solution: the use of the Leucaena leucocephala
plant, which grows wild, being part of the natural grazing of goats and sheep. For 78 days, the
effects of this plant in the reduction of infection by gastrointestinal and lung parasites were
evaluated. For this, three groups of goats were fed with different concentration levels of L.
leucocephala administered daily (0%, 15% and 30%). From each group, every 15 days, faeces
and blood were collected and laboratorial techniques were carried out to identify the forms of
parasites eliminated, followed by a comparison of the results obtained in the different groups. The
administration of 15% and 30% of this plant had effects on reducing the number of parasitic forms
excreted, namely, gastrointestinal strongilides eggs and infective larvae and pulmonary
strongilides larvae. The use of L. leucocephala has proven to be a possible alternative as a natural

Authors: Garcia, Tiago Emanuel
The present work was carried out in the experimental farm of Almocreva (Beja) in the year of 2012/2013 and consisted in the study of the effect of two commercial herbicides (Hussar and Hussar Plus) to control post-emergence broadleaved weeds in barley crop (Hordeum distichum L.) under no-till. For each of the herbicides were carried out two field experimentations, being one of them with the aim to determine the efficacy of these chemical products to control weeds (experimentation of efficacy) and the other, to prove their selectivity in relation to barley crop (experimentation of selectivity).
In all experimentations were applied three different herbicide doses in two distinct application timings.
For both the herbicides was found, that the anticipation of the application for an early weed development stage has led to a greater efficacy in the control of these weeds for all used doses, but this fact did not corresponded to a greater productivity of the crop, but to a decrease in grain yield per unit of area with the anticipation of the application.2015-03-01T00:00:00Z
